This is a special map. Stony Lake is known as the "gem of the Kawarthas" and is the lake nearest and dearest to the Grand Trunk Trading Company. It is a source of inspiration for this company as well as our appreciation for cottage life.
This would be one of the earliest and most detailed maps of the lake after nearly 75 years of building the Trent-Severn Waterway to connect Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario. There is no date on this map but based on comparable artifacts, it is likely the original version of this map would have been produced between 1912 and 1920 by the Department of Rails & Canals.
Stony Lake is approximately 9 1/2 miles long stretching from the southwest end of Clear Lake to the eastern reaches of Quarry Bay on Upper Stony. As you can see from the map, there are a large number of islands that define the waterway, and navigating the rocks and channels requires local knowledge or competence with marine charts.
Even during this timeframe, Stony Lake was a popular destination for local cottagers and tourists. The map highlights island names, navigation paths, businesses and service points as well as names of property owners, some of which are still on the lake today. This map is also historically significant because as an official government document that refers to the lake as "Stony" this should finally put to rest the great debate amongst locals about whether the correct spelling includes an "e." 😉
